Which is faster, a lion or a cheetah?

Which is faster, a lion or a cheetah?

When it comes to pure speed, the winner is clear: the cheetah is significantly faster than the lion. Here's the breakdown:

  • Cheetah: The undisputed land speed champion, reaching breathtaking speeds of up to 70 mph (112 km/h) in short bursts. This incredible speed is enabled by a combination of factors, including its flexible spine, powerful muscles, and aerodynamic body shape.
  • Lion: While still a fast predator, a lion's top speed maxes out at around 50 mph (80 km/h) for short distances. They are built for strength and endurance, allowing them to chase prey over longer distances rather than relying on pure bursts of speed.

So, in a sprint race, the cheetah would leave the lion in the dust! In real-world hunting situations, however, it's not always just about speed. While cheetahs excel in open savannahs where they can utilize their speed, lions have the advantage of working together in prides, which can be formidable against prey even if they can't outrun them.
